Essaouira Excursion Details

Essaouira has a busy historical center complete with many ancient walls that surround the city. It is a delightful and easy day trip. Visit the ocher ramparts of the ancient medina and the wind-assisted waves coming from the Atlantic Ocean which now shelter from the ancient alleys of the old medina.

Essaouira (UNESCO World Heritage Site) was built by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and is surrounded by ramparts of pink sandstone. Several Portuguese fortifications and a trading post date to the fifteenth century. The town, however, was not built until the late 1700s, when an Alouite sultan, Mohammed II, sanctioned the building of the city.

There is a bustling fishing port with white sand beaches and dunes, with its colorful wooden fishing boats, excellent seafood, hippies, and sailors, as well as artists and musicians, Essaouira has long been a favorite retreat. A vibrant souk, the old city gates, and the sqalas – fortified sea bastions – are all attractions nearby.

Some of these include the Sidi Med Ben Abdallah Museum, some fun shopping, and others for real adventure seekers. Most visitors enjoy strolling along Essaouira’s impressive sandy beach.
